A Pact Of Saving
Paintings inspired by “The Dictionary of Animal Languages” by Heidi Sopinka
Many concepts at the heart of this story resonate with my own life.
Art, animals, love, friendship, and how we “save” each other. Over two decades ago, I segued from humans to animals as my primary subject matter. There is no end to my fascination, enchantment, and awe with the beauty and complexity of the non-human animal kingdom. I love and respect them. They are my greatest teachers regarding how to live in balance on the planet.
This novel about a young British artist, Ivory Frame, navigating her way from childhood to becoming part of the surrealist group of artists in Paris, to being devastated by the cruelties of WWII and coming to North America to pursue studies in recording animal languages has both deepened and illuminated my own artistic life journey. By pairing my paintings with passages from the novel, I am expressing the sacred kinship I feel with animals and how their presence and continued existence is essential to my own life.
