Mark Gould earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Iowa, but detoured from painting for a number of years to be a general contractor. In the mid-1980’s, Gould returned to art and studied at the Denver Art Students League and the University of New Mexico. Gould currently lives in Taos, New Mexico.
Mark Gould began his painting career depicting colorful houses that he affectionately named My Neighbor’s House. Growing up, his family always rented their homes, they never owned one. Gould found solace and consistency at his friend and neighbor’s house and has painted versions of it over and over. Gould’s vibrant and almost abstracted portrayal of buildings and landscapes creates dynamic and brilliant paintings. Gould loves color, “I don’t feel like I have to use colors as they are exactly in nature. I often use whatever colors I have on my palette or whatever I decide to squeeze out of the tube while I’m working.”
Gould says, “work is flowing. It’s a wonderfully creative feeling, and a feeling of relief. Painting is a healing experience for me.”
